Why You're Really Procrastinating (It's Not Laziness)

Procrastination can be a psychological refuge — Flinders University psychologist Dr. Gareth Furber explains why 'I'm a procrastinator' can feel safer to your nervous system than submitting work and finding out where you actually stand.

A Flinders University psychologist argues that procrastination isn't mainly about avoiding work — it's about avoiding what the work might reveal about you. When you delay submitting an assignment, your nervous system may be protecting you from a harder truth: that your skills, understanding, or effort might fall short of your own expectations. The cruel irony is that the 'I'm just a procrastinator' label, while not a good identity to carry, can feel safer than trying your best and getting found wanting. But a real attempt — even one that earns tough feedback — gives you information, a next step, and something to build on; avoidance gives you only temporary relief and no direction. Next time you catch yourself stalling, try asking: am I avoiding the task, or am I avoiding what the task might say about me?
